Seasonal Verona It’s a lot quieter in Verona during the cooler months (from June to September the place is packed for the opera season at the Arena, www.arena.it). During the autumn and winter period there are dozens of fairs in the town and surrounding region celebrating the area’s proud culinary and winemaking traditions. Villages across the province hold grape-harvest festivals in September/October such as the Festa dell’Uva in Soave (0039 045 768 0648, www.comunesoave.it). In March, the Olimpiade del Formaggio (Cheese Olympics, www.monteveronese.it, 0039 045 619 9054) takes place in Verona, followed by Italy’s most important wine fair, Vinitaly (www.vinitaly.com, 0039 045 829 8111, 6-10 April).
Verona’s cuisine manages to combine Italian sensibilities with middle-European heft. Menu favourites include sausages and cured meats, bigoli (hearty spaghetti often served with anchovies or duck) and Verona’s beloved pastizada de caval, braised horse meat. The traditional Osteria al Duomo (via Duomo 7A, 045 800 4505) is the place to blend in with the Verona crowd. The menu at tiny Ostaria La Stueta (via Redentore 4B, 045 803 2462) is limited and traditional, but unfailingly delicious. Off via Mazzini, Ristorante Greppia (vicolo Samaritana 3, 045 800 4577) boasts some of the best food in Verona. A pleasant spot for a drink is Al Mascaron (No.16, 045 597 081), on quiet piazza San Zeno.
For the active, the Adige valley leads to the hiking trails of the Dolomite mountains, while the beautiful Lake Garda beckons to the east. Those wanting more culture should take the train to either Milan or Venice, both of which are only about 90 minutes away from Verona (Stazione Porta Nuova, 89 2021, www.veronaportanuova.it; www.trenitalia.it, 892 021).
